Why your master sounds worse than your mix
You've spent weeks on the mix. It sounds good. You're actually proud of it.
Then you master it — or run it through a plugin chain — and something dies. It's louder, technically. But it sounds flatter. Squashed. Like the life got pressed out of it.
This is one of the most common things bedroom producers complain about and almost nobody diagnoses it correctly.
The loudness trap
Here's what's actually happening in most cases: your master is louder, and louder sounds better to your ears. When you switch back to the mix it sounds thin and quiet by comparison. You assume the master is broken.
But flip the comparison. Pull the master down to the same volume as the mix and listen again.
Nine times out of ten, the master sounds better. More glue, more weight, more clarity in the low end. The mastering chain did what it was supposed to. The problem was the comparison, not the result.
Always null-compare at matched loudness. If you're not doing this, you're not hearing what you think you're hearing.
When it actually does sound worse
Sometimes the master genuinely is worse. There are three reasons this happens.
Over-limiting. You've pushed the limiter too hard trying to hit a loudness target. The transients are getting slammed — snare hits lose their crack, kick loses its punch. The waveform looks like a brick. Your track is technically loud but it feels static, exhausted. There's no more air left in it.
The fix is to back off the limiter until the gain reduction meter stops working overtime — maybe 2–3dB peaks, not 6. Then accept the lower LUFS number.
Loudness target confusion. You targeted -14 LUFS because someone told you that's what Spotify wants. So you barely touched it — minimal compression, no real mastering chain. The result sounds open and dynamic... because there's nothing holding it together. No glue. No weight in the low end. Just your mix with the volume politely left alone.
That's not a master. That's just your mix again.
The master EQ is fighting the mix. You added a high shelf at 10k to add air. Sounds great in solo. But your mix already had brightness — now it's harsh. Or you boosted 60hz for warmth and now the kick and bass are fighting each other in mono.
EQ on the master chain needs to be subtle. Half a dB at the right frequency moves things. 3dB moves them into a different problem.
The comparison problem (again)
Here's the real issue with home mastering: you've heard the mix a hundred times. You know every detail. The master is new, unfamiliar. Your brain reports the difference as wrong.
Give it a day. Come back with fresh ears. The things you thought were problems often aren't there anymore. The things that are still wrong are the real issues.
What to actually check
If your master sounds worse, check these things in this order:
- Match the volume and compare again. If it's fine at matched volume, the mastering is fine — you're just not used to hearing it.
- Check your true peak. If you're hitting 0dBFS, you have inter-sample clipping. This adds distortion you might be hearing as harshness. True peak should stay under -1dBTP.
- Check your dynamic range. A DR below 6 is a sign you've squeezed too hard. A heavy electronic banger can live there. Anything else probably can't.
- Check your integrated LUFS. If you're at -8 or hotter, you've almost certainly damaged your transients to get there. Back off.
